In my almost-dream, I hear them laughing
The games, the songs, the simple happiness
I can't find here.
They speak to me of this girl, that toy,
With the kind of gravity only a child can give
And I smile despite the deep-down ache.
Half a world away I think I can hear them on a Saturday morning
The crash and laughter of so

like floodwaters heard through a tunnel
like holding a crying child
feeling the body wracked by sobs, deep down inside
only the remnants of tears as they cool and dry
now swallow hard, like rocking a child to sleep
deep breaths, singing quietly to soothe the thing

the child must wake, to scream from so many nights' phantoms
the animal will roar, kept caged for too long
